Minutes of the meeting 7/1/04 - Thorpewood

It was decided that minutes of the neighborhood watch meetings were to be recorded. Therefore, this meeting information is expanded to try to include all
subjects discussed to date.

1. Attendance - There are approximately 120 homeowners in the Gambrill park Road and associated area included in our neighborhood watch program. Meeting attendees usually number 12 to 20. Approximately 15 neighbors attended this meeting.

2. How to improve interest - several ideas were tabled. Among them: pot luck dinner, a newsletter emphasizing needs and purposes. Possible newsletter subjects might include local burglaries, illegal watershed parties, questionable visitors and activities, emergency response from local fire and rescue facilities, making your property accessible for emergency vehicles, windstorm, fire
and flood sensitivity.

3. Block Captains - Interested individuals have volunteered their services as block captains. The function of this position is to facilitate communication between all parties within the organization. Block captains are: (Suzie Knoff, Steve Chambers, Mark and Johnna Wheeler, Mike and Deb Irons).

4. Stickers - A suggestion was made that reflective bumper stickers be obtained for distribution to our local residents. These stickers will allow easy identification of local vs. non-local travelers through our community. Of course, this tactic will be only as successful as neighborhood participation allows. A retail source for the purchase of these stickers has not yet been located.

5. Newsletter - events occur on our mountain that are of interest but are not communicated among residents. A newsletter could become the medium
for such information. It would also serve to distribute neighborhood watch information.

6. Meeting minutes - It was suggested that minutes of the meeting be kept as a permanent record of meeting subjects and as an instrument to help keep projects on track. John Lind volunteered services as recording secretary.

7. Web site - Steve Chambers is maintaining the neighborhood watch web site. Site address is www.gambrillparkwatch.com.

8. Information distribution - Steve Chambers has been distributing neighborhood watch meeting announcements and other information throughout the area by motorbike. A more efficient, less demanding means to assure distribution should be considered such as publishing via this website.

9. Next meeting - Next business meeting is scheduled for September 22, 2004 at 6:30pm at Thorpewood.

10. Program speaker - Mr. David Robbins, Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, spoke to us at some length regarding fire safety in a forested community. His program is called "Firewise". The goal is to encourage and assist in action that will minimize exposure of homes to wildfire. Fires have occurred on Catoctin Mountain in the past and it was the consensus of the attendees that participation in the program as a "firewise community" would be desirable. An initial Firewise Board was determined to include Larry Hood, Steve Chambers, Robert McCutcheon and Johnna Wheeler. From this beginning the project will be formalized under the supervision of Mr. Robbins.
